The People’s Hearing: Impact of COVID-19 in Prisons & Jails

August 19, 2020 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

On Zoom – register here. To submit testimony, complete this form. Those who are invited to testify will be notified by Tuesday, August 18th. All will be invited to submit written testimony. Together, we will surface the public health crisis of incarceration in New York State, give voice to the 48,000 New Yorkers behind bars, and demand action by our elected officials. And don’t forget to spread the word!

Last week, New York’s legislature began a series of nine hearings on the COVID-19 pandemic. However, none of the hearings address the pandemic in jails or prisons despite an infection rate in four state prisons that is more than double the state’s overall rate.

New York State has offered little transparency on conditions behind bars throughout the crisis, released only a small fraction of elder and immunocompromised people, and used solitary confinement in lieu of medically-sound quarantine protocols, leaving incarcerated people vulnerable as the virus spreads.
Because the legislature refuses to conduct its own hearing or pass legislation to free our elders, end solitary confinement or address the harms of COVID-19 behind bars, it’s up to us. Join us on Wednesday, August 19th at 10am for The People’s Hearing on COVID-19 in Jails and Prisons.
