Town Hall re LEAD (Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion)

August 20, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

VOICE Buffalo, Partnership for the Public Good, Evergreen Health Services, the WNY Peace Center, and  other organizations and municipalities started a campaign to lower arrests for nonviolent crimes. You, the community, researched, did one on ones, met with public officials and determined that the LEAD program was a model that would work for our city. LEAD, Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion, is a collaborative pre-arrest diversion program between Community and Law Enforcement that stops arrests for nonviolent offenses that occur due to poverty, substance abuse, and mental health. You organized community leaders, public officials including District Attorney Flynn, the Mayor’s office and Commissioner Lockwood through research action meetings, and gathered over 3,000 letters and postcards to show evidence of the community’s buy in for this program. In June, Mayor Brown announced that LEAD would finally be implemented, and, to celebrate, as well as to bring renewed awareness to what this program is and the power it holds to reform policing practices, Voice Buffalo organized the Town Hall happening LThursday, August 20th, 6-7:30 via zoom. The zoom link is below.
Despite all of our hard work, the Buffalo Police Department has declined our invitation to participate in tomorrow’s Town Hall. Let’s show the Buffalo Police Department that the community is STILL invested in Community Policing, alternatives to arrests, and systems that are rooted in Restorative Justice! Log in tomorrow evening!
